I finished this a few days ago. Here's "Outshined" for your amusement. The original piece is approximately 14.75"x11" on illustration board and created with ink and ink wash. The final piece was scanned and colorized using a Cintiq and Adobe Photoshop.

Here's a glimpse of my latest work. This is the black & white version (underpainting) of a piece I'm doing for the cover of "Some Days Suck, Some Days Suck Worse" by Michael Kozlowski. I'm showing the initial sketch as well as the finished black & white digital painting that I did in Photoshop using a Cintiq.

This is the first piece that I've worked up completely with the Cintiq. This is also the first time I'm utilizing the "natural brushes" in Photoshop. I can't remember now my reasons for avoiding these brushes. They take a little getting used to but I'm really starting to like them.

I'll post the colorized version once that's completed. The type is designed but will need a little more work once the artwork is fully colored. You'll get to see that here on the blog as well.

Studio upgrades

Yesterday I purchased a Cintiq 21UX. It's a 21-inch monitor that is pressure sensitive for drawing and painting. I've been using an Intuos tablet for the past few years and, while I like it a lot, it's going to be much nicer working directly onto the screen.

This morning I'm upgrading to Adobe Design Premium CS5.5. I also upgraded to the newest version of Painter so all of my digital tools will be the most recent ones. Oh yeah, I'm maxing out the RAM in my iMac as well to 16GB. The plan is to become more efficient and to put out a larger volume of even better artwork. That's the plan. Please join me in crossing your fingers. ;-)

I'm sure I'll be commenting on these new tools as I begin transitioning to them. The Cintiq has to be shipped to me so I have no idea what to expect on that front. Hoping it's going to be simple to set up.

Wizard World Chicago Comic Con 2011

I'll be in Artist Alley (table #3306) at Wizard World Chicago Comic Con next week (August 11-14). I'll have plenty of things for you to check out ... t-shirts, original art, prints, an art magazine, sketchbooks, comic books and a few buttons.

I've purchased some 5x7 cradled wood panels that I may be doing some original drawings on during the show. I'll be pricing those very reasonably so stop by and take a look.

"Ancient" skateboard art for "Decks for Dogs Charity Event" - July 1, 2011

This is a skateboard that I painted to be auctioned at a fundraiser on July 1, 2011. The fundraiser is to benefit Mariah's Promise. Here's some additional information from Luxe De Vil Salon about the event.

Mariah’s Promise is a non-profit animal rescue that relies on outside support to keep it running. They help to house, rehabilitate, and adopt out dogs in need. Recently they have come into some legal issues regarding the pit bulls that they house and adopt out. This has cascaded out of control, and they are in desperate need of any and all help.

So we at Luxe De Vil Salon are here to help. This event features the art of over 25 local artists and their unique styles for auction. Also more from local vendors!

Plus La Muerte Apparel will hold a car show and live music from The Bloody Fives

Invite everyone you can, Mariah's Promise needs all the help we can give them.

Here's a new piece of zombie art. This one is inspired by The Walking Dead television show. I enjoyed season one quite a bit. I love the comics too ... especially the comics!

This new piece is mixed media (pencil, ink, acrylic paint, watercolor paint) on a cradled 9"x12" wood panel. It'll be hanging in the art show at Contagion: Outbreak this weekend. I'm hoping to finish up 2 more of these zombie pieces before we leave Thursday morning. The other 2 are also inspired by the television show. Check out the finished piece as well as the initial pencil drawing.

"Return to Bunker Hill" ... ink and watercolor on 9"x12" watercolor paper by Robert Elrod. It's an homage to Frederick Coffay Yohn and I did the piece specifically for the cover of the Boston Comic Con edition of my 2011 sketchbook. I did it Saturday while watching hockey.

I'm doing short-run editions specific to the shows I'm doing this year. I'll have 25 signed and numbered copies of the book at the show this weekend. They'll be available exclusively at the show. When they're gone they're gone and won't be offered elsewhere. I guess that's what exclusive means, right?

Oh yeah, if you're interested in getting your own Monster Portrait (not just a zombie ... any monster), I'm charging $65 for these. This one is painted in acrylic paint with ink and gouache on 9"x12" watercolor paper. Price is per person. If 2 people then I add 50% to the order and work on 11"x14". Shipping within the US is included in the price (via USPS flat-rate envelope).

I saw yesterday that I'm on a panel at Comicfest this Saturday at 3pm. The panel is called "Horror Comics 101". I'm hoping there's a mediator there to ask us some questions since I've never been on a panel before. :-0 Should be fun. Here's the info I found on the Comicfest website.

2011 is “Horror” Year at Comicfest, as we have a plethora of professionals who write and draw comics in this hot genre. Find out these creators make zombies, vampires and monsters so scary in our often jaded, superhero saturated comics medium. Here is the story that I put together for the 24-hour comics event held at Time Warp Comics in Boulder. These pages will be collected with others created at the event into a book to benefit the Hero Initiative. I had a lot of fun doing these pages. The story's been rattling around in my head for years and I'm glad to have it finally out of there.

Thanks to Jay Sternitzky of Paper Dream Productions, Wayne (and all of the fine folks) at Time Warp Comics, Chris at Murphy's Bar & Grill, Chad at Oskar Blues Brewery, the other artists, the guys from Indie Spinner Rack, and all of those who came out to support us. The hours seemed to fly by ... it was that much fun!

I completed my pages within about 19 hours ... some of that was spent chatting, having sandwiches and pizza ... and doing a little browsing through the art books. Yeah, I bought 3 of 'em. I love books.

24-Hour Comics Event

This Saturday at 10am through Sunday 10am I will be taking a 24-hour comics challenge. The challenge that I've accepted is to create a 5-6 page comic story, fully inked, within that time. My comic, along with those of the other creators involved, will be compiled into a benefit comic book. The proceeds will go to the Hero Initiative.

Our sponsor, Time Warp Comics, will have special sales going on through the 24 hours as well as a special V.I.P. event from 8pm to 10pm Saturday night. There will be posters by the participating artists as well as an opportunity for the V.I.P.s to get sketches during that time.

During the Cowtown Alternative Comix Fest on Saturday I worked on inking this piece. Most of it was completed during the show and the rest of it was finished this evening. It's a return to a character I'd not drawing in nearly 5 years. After taking some time away from him, I've come to really miss him. I'm planning to dust off the poor sap and work up a new tale or two featuring George and his "friends". I'll plan to periodically post some of the artwork for your amusement.

BTW, the piece is 12"x16" on a watercolor block with ink and ink wash.

Vacation and San Diego Comic Con

I'm really looking forward to taking a 9-day vacation with my wife, Teri. This year we're heading to San Francisco for a few days. Can't tell you how much I enjoy going there. Such a cool city. After we eat some great food, see giant redwoods, visit wine country, etc. we'll be going to San Diego for Comic Con. Last year I had a table in Artists' Alley, thanks to the generosity of the folks that run the show. This year I didn't request a table and am going to try to catch some of the programming, do some shopping, perhaps talk with some editors, and just generally try to relax and have a great time.

In the meantime, I'm working on a new cover for May December Publications for the upcoming novel "Zomblog 2" by TW Brown. If you've not read the first one and enjoy the zombie genre, you're really missing out.

Upon my return, I'll be working on additional book covers for May December Publications and Sonar4 Publications for upcoming books. I'll also be doing some new comics work and getting some long-standing projects out the door. If you know me, you're aware that I hate to say "no" to anyone and sometimes take on more than I should. My apologies for those who are waiting for me. You won't be disappointed with what's coming.

If you're a fan of zombie literature / action adventure / post-apocalytpic fiction then I urge you to check out "Kings of the Dead" by Tony Faville. It's written in journal format but still gives you enough descriptive narrative to give you the full story. You'll care about the characters. You'll enjoy the action. You'll wish there was more of it to read just as soon as you finish it. Don't worry, it's a complete tale.
